Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Victory Over UMass Lowell

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Holy Cross 2, UMass Lowell 0

  • The Lead: Holy Cross freshmen Aly Spencer (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Christina Callahan (Newton, Mass.) both tallied goals to help lead the Crusaders to a 2-0 triumph over UMass Lowell in non-conference women's soccer action on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • UMass Lowell's Emily Duchesne put a shot on net off a corner kick in the 23rd minute, but Holy Cross senior goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) made the stop.
  • Callahan and junior forward Annie Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) launched back-to-back shots on goal in the 26th and 28th minutes, respectively, but River Hawk netminder Jill Carlson made both saves.
  • Spencer tallied the first goal of the game in the 32nd minute of action (31:54). She received a pass from freshman defender Sheridan Nulty (Marietta, Ga.) in the middle of the field and lofted a shot from 20 yards out just under the crossbar to put Holy Cross on top 1-0.
  • Callahan added an insurance goal for the Crusaders in the 75th minute (74:14). Senior defender Ally Pasquariello (Suffield, Conn.) fed a pass to Callahan and she lobbed the ball over Carlson's head to make the score its final, 2-0.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • McCabe earned her eighth win of the season with three saves in the shutout effort, while Carlson gathered six saves for the River Hawks.
  • Holy Cross held advantages in shots (12-6) and shots on goal (8-3), while UMass Lowell held the edge in corner kicks (5-2).

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • The eight wins for Holy Cross are its most since the 2000 team finished the campaign with 10 victories (10-11-1).
  • It is also the first time in in program history that Holy Cross did not record a regular season non-conference loss during the season.
  • Spencer scored her team- and Patriot League-best seventh goal of the season, which is the most by a Holy Cross freshman since Katherine Donnelly tallied eight in 2008. The goal was also Spencer's fourth game-winner of the season.
  • Callahan's goal was the first of her career, while Nulty registered her first collegiate assist. The helper by Pasquariello was her first of the season and the second of her career.  
  • McCabe recorded her sixth clean sheet of the season, which ties her for the fourth most single-season shutouts in program history.

  • Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 20, when it will open Patriot League play with a 1:05 p.m. home contest versus Loyola (Md.) at the Linda Johnson Smith Soccer Stadium.
