Women's Soccer Falls In Double Overtime To Lafayette, 3-2

THE BASICS:

  • Score: Lafayette 3, Holy Cross 2 (2OT)
  • Records: Lafayette (4-7-0, 1-3-0 PL); Holy Cross (9-2-2, 1-2-1 PL)
  • Location: Easton, Pa. (Oaks Stadium)
  • The Lead: Lafayette sophomore Kaelin King tallied the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute to help lead the Leopards to a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Holy Cross in Patriot League women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Oaks Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The two teams remained scoreless through the first half, as the Leopards held the 5-4 edge in total shots and the 3-1 margin in shots on goal.
  • Lafayette broke the stalemate in the 63rd minute (62:03), as Jaclyn Giordano intercepted a Holy Cross pass and slipped the ball past Crusader senior goalkeeper Carly McCabe (Barrington, R.I.) to put the Leopards ahead 1-0.
  • Holy Cross responded just over 15 minutes later (77:16), as freshman forward Aly Spencer (Tewksbury, Mass.) put back a rebound from the top of the box off a free kick to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Lafayette grabbed the lead back in the 84th minute (83:39). King sent a cross across the box from the left side that bounced off a Holy Cross defender to Jaclyn Giordano who drove home the loose ball to give the Leopards the 2-1 lead.
  • The Crusaders would tie the game at 2-2 with less than two minutes in regulation (88:08). Spencer sent in a corner kick from the left side that ricocheted off a Lafayette defender to junior forward Annie Galvin (Attleboro, Mass.) who tipped it past Leopard goalkeeper Danielle Sedillo.
  • King tallied the game-winner with 7:50 left in the second overtime (102:10). Alex Reisinger sent a ball into the box to King, who settled it and finished with a shot from the right side to clinch the victory for the Leopards.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • McCabe made six saves for Holy Cross, while Sedillo made 10 stops for Lafayette.
  • Holy Cross held the advantage in total shots (22-13), shots on goal (12-9) and corner kicks (5-2).
  • The Crusaders heavily outshot Lafayette in the second half with a 14-5 margin in total shots and a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Spencer led the Crusaders with eight total shots and five on target, while Galvin recorded three shots on goal.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • With a goal and assist, Spencer now has nine goals and three assists on the year for 21 total points. Her goals mark is the most by a Holy Cross freshman since Lee Hendrickson set the all-time program mark with 20 goals in 1987. Spencer's nine goals are tied for the seventh most by a Crusader in a single-season.  
  • Spencer's 21 points are the most by a Crusader since Kate O'Shaughnessy recorded 21 in 2001 and are tied for the ninth most in program history. Her points are the most by a Holy Cross freshman since O'Shaughnessy tallied 24 in 1998.
