LaBarbera Named Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Manis Earns First Team Honors

Holy Cross Athletics   03-08-2019

Freshman guard Avery LaBarbera of the Holy Cross women’s basketball team has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year, the conference announced on Friday, March 8. Junior forward Lauren Manis earned All-Patriot League first team honors, while LaBarbera was additionally named to the third team and All-Rookie team.

LaBarbera averaged 11.7 points per game – second-most on the team – during her rookie campaign. She led the league’s freshmen in assists (85), 3-point percentage (.335), 3-pointers made (55) and free-throw percentage (.879). During 2018-19, she was the Crusaders' top scorer five times, while also leading Holy Cross with 39 steals.

Her best Patriot League contest came in a victory over Colgate on March 2, in which she had 24 points – including a career-high six 3-pointers – and eight assists; in non-conference play, her career-best in points came in a 30-point, nine-assist showing against Brown on November 18.

LaBarbera earned Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors four times in 2018-19, the most of any freshman in the conference this year.

“I’m just extremely proud of her,” said Holy Cross interim head coach Ann McInerney. “Since the moment she stepped on our campus, she’s been a breath of fresh air. She works so hard, she brings it every day – she’s a baller. I think her energy and enthusiasm for the game is contagious, and she’s been a big spark for our team and a fan favorite. It’s been a pleasure to coach her.”

During the regular season, Manis averaged 17.1 points per game and 11.1 points per game, making her just one of three players in the league to average a double-double. She has tallied 20 double-doubles in 29 games this season and sits in third place in single-season program history in that category.

Manis had 11 games during the regular season with 20 or more points; she had back-to-back 24-point performances against Colgate on March 2 and Lehigh on March 6. She posted a career-high 30 points in a nonconference game at Boston College on November 15 and later recorded her 1,000th career point in a 27-point, 16-rebound showing against Brown on November 18, making her the second-fastest player in program history to reach the milestone.

This is the second consecutive year Manis has earned first team honors after being a second team and All-Rookie selection her freshman year.

“Lauren is a special player, and she just keeps getting better and better,” McInerney said. “She’s really improved her game in all areas this year: scoring, rebounding, as well as her defensive side of the game. She has carried our team in times that we’ve needed her. She’s a hard worker, and it’s always great to see hard work pay off.”

LaBarbera becomes the sixth player in program history to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors, joining Manis, who was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year during the 2016-17 season.

The Crusaders (17-12) have recorded their most wins in a season since 2013-14, earning the fifth seed and a first-round bye in the Patriot League Tournament. They will face No. 4 Boston University on Monday, March 11. Tipoff in Boston is scheduled for 7 p.m.
