Baseball Places 3 on Academic All-Patriot League Team

Holy Cross Athletics   05-09-2019

Three members of the Holy Cross baseball team received Academic All-Patriot League honors, the conference announced on Thursday, May 9. Senior right-handed pitcher Declan Cronin, sophomore right-handed pitcher Liam Dvorak and junior center fielder Austin Masel were each recognized for the first time in their careers.

Cronin has a 3.79 cumulative grade-point average while majoring in history with a minor in philosophy. He has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll three times in his career. This year, as a member of the All-Patriot League first team, Cronin led Holy Cross in Patriot League action with a 2.70 ERA, 5-1 record and 43 strikeouts. He ranked second among the league’s pitchers in conference ERA this year.

Dvorak, who was also an All-Patriot League first team selection, has a 3.62 cumulative GPA while studying physics. He was named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a freshman. Dvorak posted a 6-4 record and a 3.58 earned-run average during the 2019 regular season, and went 4-2 with a 2.89 ERA in league contests. He has totaled 76 strikeouts during 2019, the second-most by a Patriot League pitcher this year and the ninth-most by a Holy Cross pitcher in single-season program history.

Masel, an All-Patriot League second team honoree, owns a 3.39 cumulative GPA as an economics major. In 2019, he hit .319 (61-for-191) with 13 doubles, four triples, two home runs, 29 RBI and 12 stolen bases. In Patriot League play, Masel batted .340 (34-for-100), with nine doubles, two triples and two home runs, recording a .530 slugging percentage.

This is the first time since 2013 that Holy Cross has had three student-athletes earn a spot on the All-Academic team. With those three selections, Holy Cross matches Army West Point and Lehigh for the most Academic All-Patriot League honorees in 2019.

The Patriot League Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and Academic All-Patriot League Team honor student-athletes who excel both on and off the field. The awards are nominated and voted on by the Patriot League’s baseball sports information directors.

Holy Cross will host Army West Point in a Patriot League semifinal series beginning on Saturday, May 11 at Fitton Field.
