Kelly Nelson Selected to NFCA All-Northeast Region
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross softball freshman pitcher Kelly Nelson has been named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s Division I All-Northeast Region third team, as announced by the NFCA Wednesday.
NFCA member coaches from each of the Association’s 10 regions voted on the teams from their respective regions, with all honorees now eligible for the 2019 NFCA Division I All-America squads.
Nelson finished the year at 28th in the nation with her 208 strikeouts, the seventh-most of any freshman. Her 8.2 strikeouts per seven innings was 37th and her 4.16 strikeout to walk ratio was 51st.
She is one of only six Patriot League players to be recognized at the all-region level, joining Boston University’s Ali DuBois, Alex Heinen, and Emily Gant, and Bucknell’s Anna Gimmestad and Allyse Volpe. Gimmestad and Volpe were named to the Mid-Atlantic region’s third team, Dubois and Heinen to the Northeast’s first, and Gant joins Nelson on the third.
On the season, Nelson finished with a 2.45 ERA, a .218 opposing batting average, 208 strikeouts, seven wins, 15 complete games in 23 starts, and two saves all over 177 innings pitched. Her 208 strikeouts set a new single-season program record, breaking the old mark of 192 set in 1999. Her ERA was the lowest by a Crusader pitcher since 2012 and her opposing batting average is the lowest ever by a Holy Cross pitcher on record.
Nelson is the first Crusader to be named to the all-region teams since Mandy McCarthy in 2017.
