Softball Wraps Season with 8-2 Victory Over Lafayette

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team finished its season with an 8-2 victory over Lafayette Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders end their season on a four-game winning streak and with the most wins, 14, in a season since 2011.

Kelly Nelson got the start in the circle and went three innings giving up just one hit and two walks, while striking out eight. Alexandra Held finished the game going the remaining four innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits, no walks, and four strikeouts.

At the plate, Jessie Nagel was 3-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, a double, and a walk. Jackie Brewster was 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Taylor Wahler went 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI, and a triple. Sydney Behrens was 2-for-3 with a run and a double. Erin Bengston doubled, scored, drove in two more, and walked. Bailey Chavez scored a run and Olivia Sloane reached base with a walk.

First Inning:

  • Holy Cross struck first when Nagel doubled down the left field line, bringing both Brewster, who had walked, and Chavez, who had reached on an error, home.
  • Bengston would walk in the inning as well. On a wild pitch, Nagel would score and Bengston made her way to third. Then, on a passed ball, Bengston crossed the plate as well.

Second:

  • Brewster singled and Nagel followed with a single of her own.
  • Wahler beat the throw for an infield single to second base and Brewster scored.
  • In the next at bat, Bengston doubled to deep left center, scoring both Nagel and Wahler.

Fourth:

  • Lafayette got just its second hit of the game in the fourth, a double, and used a couple of ground outs to score its first run.

Fifth:

  • With two outs, Behrens doubled to center field. She scored on Brewster’s single up the middle.

Seventh:

  • The Leopards would add one more in the final frame, but with the game clearly in hand, Held got the final three outs with a strikeout, a ground out, and a fly out to Brewster in center for the victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Bengston’s double gave her 16 on the season, setting a new single-season program record.
  • Wahler’s triple was her sixth of the season and 14th of her career, tying her for the most all-time in program history.
  • Nelson finished the year with 208 strikeouts, a program record and the fifth-most ever by a Patriot League pitcher in a single season.
  • The 14 wins are the team’s most since the 2011 season when the Crusaders won 18 games and went 10-10 in Patriot League play.
