Women's Soccer Players to Volunteer in Uganda Over Break
WORCESTER, Mass. – Three members of the Holy Cross women’s soccer team, senior Caroline Wallace and juniors Carly Flahive and Kelly Crowley, will be volunteering with Soccer Without Borders’ Kampala Youth Festival in Uganda from Jan. 3 – 13.
The festival is a community event and soccer camp for the youth of the Nsambya and Kirombe neighborhoods of Kampala. The volunteers will help to provide instruction both on the soccer field and off of it with English language instruction, life skills classes, team-building activities, and access to educational support and supplies as well as athletic clothing and equipment.
“Soccer has given me so much over the years,” Flahive said. “It has taught me major life lessons, gave me great memories, and led me to make some of my best friends. Having the opportunity to give back to kids through a sport I have grown up loving is something that I am definitely looking forward to.”
The girls will be there during the second week of January, during which many of the Ugandan schools are out of session and the neighborhoods are relatively idle. Part of the theme of the festival is to help youth work collaboratively, resolve conflicts, and appreciate each other.
“The festival is going to allow us to give back to those who love the game as much as we do, but lack the resources we may take for granted here in the US,” Wallace said. “This program embodies a huge principle of our mission statement here [at Holy Cross] of being ‘men and women for others’ as we prepare to fully assimilate into a culture completely opposite of New England and offer all we can to the Uganda community.”
Uganda’s population of refugees and internally displaced peoples is one of the largest in Africa. The life of these refugees in Kampala is very difficult and the volunteers will be tasked with attempting to provide assistance in areas including but not limited to education, communication, healthcare, and development.
“I’m excited to use soccer as a vehicle for positive change,” Crowley said. “I know it’ll be an experience that we will never forget."
With Wallace, Flahive, and Crowley’s trip just three weeks away, they have all been fundraising to reach the required donation amount and to cover the airfare. Each of their links can be found below.
