Box Score

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team took down Air Force, 2-1, in overtime behind a 28-save effort from Tommy Nixon. Mitch Collett scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the game.

It was a quiet first period, with neither team converting despite each team having power play opportunities. The Falcons (15-12-5, 13-9-4 AHA) outshot the Crusaders, 8-5, in the opening frame. The Crusaders (10-18-5, 10-13-5 AHA) defended over one minute of a five-on-three thanks to some strong work from netminder Tommy Nixon.

The second period saw scoring from both sides, despite a 12-3 shot differential. Air Force struck mid-way through the period. The Crusaders found some offense as they hit two posts in one power play sequence. With just under four minutes to play in the period, Holy Cross evened the game, 1-1, as Michael Laffin scored his team-best 10th goal of the season.

The third period was very quiet. Air Force recorded eight shots and Holy Cross had five. The Crusaders defended well and sent the game into overtime.

At 2:31 of the overtime frame, Micth Collett collected his own rebound to score, giving the Crusaders their first overtime win of the season. The 2-1 victory also marks Holy Cross’ 10th win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1-0 AF (2nd – 10:02, EV): Air Force’s Trevor Stone scored from the back door after a quick shot from the slot.

1-1 HC (2nd – 16:16, EV): With extended offensive zone possession, Bryce Dolan pinched down the half wall to collect the puck and skate towards the blue line. Dolan sent a good feed to Michael Laffin in the slot, who one-timed the puck to bounce past Air Force’s Billy Christopoulos.

2-1 HC (OT – 2:31, EV): In transition, Matt Slick moved the puck up the ice. Jay Mackie chipped the puck out from the wall above the top of the circle to Mitch Collett, who was rushing to the slot. Collett fired a shot off the pad of Christopoulos and collected his own rebound to give the Crusaders the victory.
