PLYMOUTH, Mich. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was defeated by the U.S. National Under-18 team, 5-2, in a New Year’s Day matinee. Neil Robinson led the Crusaders with a goal and an assist in the game. Defensemen Johnny Coughlin and Matt Slick added offense to the game, each with a goal.

The first period saw significant action as the U18s took a 2-1 lead. Less than one minute into the game, Ryder Rolston scored to give U.S. Under-18 Team the 1-0 lead. One minute and 30 seconds later, USA fired off their second of the period, this time from Alex Turcotte.

The Crusaders got on the board at the 6:16 mark of the first period when Neil Robinson scored and was assisted by Michael Laffin on the play. Erik Gordon recorded six saves as the U18s outshot the Crusaders’, 8-6, in the opening 20 minutes.

The U18s tallied their third goal midway through the second period on the power play from Cole Caufield.

The Crusaders’ best chance came in the second period as Johnny Coughlin slid a cross-slot pass to Peter Crinella on the back door. Crinella’s shot was just grabbed by the glove of U18s goaltender Cameron Rowe. Gordon turned away 10 shots, including a few breakaway attempts. The Crusaders were outshot, 11-4, in the second period.

The U18s extended their lead to 4-1 as Caufield scored on a quick short side shot five minutes into the third period. Laffin also had a point-blank opportunity midway through the final frame, but his shot went just wide of the goal. With some tic-tac-toe passing on the power play, the U18s tallied their fifth of the game from Turcotte just past the midway point of the period.

Johnny Coughlin added a power play goal as he fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle. Neil Robinson chipped a puck up the half-wall to Coughlin, who then walked the puck in and sent a snapshot to hit the back bar of the net with 2:13 remaining in the game. Matt Slick fired off a goal of his own less than one minute later on a wrist shot from the center point. Slick was assisted by Ryan Leibold and Mitch Collett as the trio rushed into the offensive zone.

The U18s tallied the final goal of the game with 39 seconds remaining, from Rolston.

Erik Gordon play nearly 51 minutes of the game, recording 23 saves on 28 shots. Beau Collins saw 8:22 minutes of action and made 5 saves. The Crusaders were outshot, 34-25, in the game.
