Men's Track and Field Set for 2019 Outdoor Season Opener
The Holy Cross men’s track and field team commences its outdoor season with a visit to Bryant University for the Black and Gold Invitational on Friday, March 29 and Saturday, March 30. The hammer throw will take place on Friday, followed by all other events on Saturday.
2018-19 Indoor Season in Review:
Sophomore Michael Pichay led the way for the Crusaders during the indoor season, earning All-Patriot League second team honors for his second-place finish in the triple jump at the Patriot League Indoor Championship. As a team, Holy Cross placed sixth.
In total, the Crusaders broke four school records during the 2018-19 season: Pichay in the triple jump (14.98 meters), junior Garrett Fortin in the 200 meters (22.16 seconds), senior Brandon Thornhill in the 60 meter hurdles (8.29 seconds) and senior Alexander Escada in the heptathlon (4,629 points).
Thornhill placed sixth in the hurdles at the conference championships. Sophomore Dan Dempsey was fifth in the high jump, and Escada was sixth in the heptathlon. Pichay had another scoring performance in the long jump with a fifth-place finish.
2018 Outdoor Season in Review:
The men’s team placed sixth at the 2018 Patriot League Outdoor Championship.
Thornhill and Gabe Piepergerdes were two of the league’s top hurdlers, as Thornhill had the third-best time in the Patriot League in 2018 in the 110 meter hurdles (14.52 seconds) while Piepergerdes was the sixth-fastest 400 meter hurdler (54.08 seconds). Thornhill was third in the 110 hurdles and Piepergerdes placed fifth in the 400 hurdles at the league championships.
Escada earned a sixth-place finish in the decathlon at the Patriot League Championship.
2019 Outdoor Schedule:
After the Black and Gold Invite, Holy Cross will send competitors to Auburn University in Alabama for the Tiger Classic on April 5 and 6. That same weekend, some Crusaders will compete at the University of New Hampshire against the Wildcats and the University of Maine.
On April 13, Holy Cross will compete at the Ocean State Invitational.
The Crusaders host their first home meet of 2019 on April 20, with the Holy Cross Invitational scheduled for April 20. The men’s side will also host a quad meet on April 23.
Holy Cross will head to the Skyhawk Invitational, hosted by Stonehill College, on April 27 as a final tune-up prior to the Patriot League Outdoor Championship.
The Crusaders will host the Patriot League Championship on May 3 and 4, their first time hosting the meet since 2012.
The New England Championships will take place on May 10 and 11, and the IC4A Championships are scheduled for May 11 and 12.
