Kelly Nelson Named ckSmithSuperior Crusader of the Week
WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman righthanded pitcher Kelly Nelson has been named the ckSmithSuperior Crusader of the Week, for competition from March 4-10. Nelson led the Holy Cross softball team in action last week as it played eight games in Florida over spring break.
During Wednesday’s 2-1 extra-inning victory at Jacksonville, Nelson threw a 16-inning complete game, allowing no earned runs on seven hits while striking out 27. Her 27 strikeouts against the Dolphins set Holy Cross and Patriot League single-game records, while coming up just one shy of the NCAA single-game record. Nelson also threw a seven-inning, two-hit complete game against Chattanooga on Saturday, as the Crusaders fell 1-0. In six appearances on the week, including three starts, she posted a 1.91 earned run average and 44 strikeouts while allowing just 18 hits in 29-1/3 innings pitched.
Overall this the season, Nelson stands 2-4 with a 1.54 earned run average and 63 strikeouts.
The Crusaders (2-11 overall) return to action on Saturday, March 16, when face Wagner at 10:00 a.m. in their opening game of the St. John’s Invitational.
