EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette guard Justin Jaworski hit two free throws with 4.7 seconds remaining to break a 67-67 tie and lift the Leopards to a 69-67 victory over the Holy Cross men’s basketball team at the Kirby Sports Center. The Crusaders fall to 13-12 overall and 4-8 in the Patriot League with the loss, while the Leopards improve to 7-16 on the season and 4-8 in the conference.

Holy Cross shot 49.1 percent from the field and 37.5 percent from three-point range on the day, but only made 41.7 percent of its free throws. Lafayette made just 40.4 percent of its field goal attempts, but was able to connect on 48.3 percent of its three-pointers and 81.3 percent of its foul shots.

The game was close early on, and Holy Cross held a 24-23 lead with 10:58 remaining in the first half. The Leopards then scored 14 straight points over the next five minutes to go in front 37-24. Lafayette led by as many as 17 points late in the half, before taking a 47-35 advantage into the locker room.

The Crusaders opened the second half with a 9-2 run to close the margin to five points (49-44). The Leopards were later up 54-49, when Holy Cross scored eight straight points to take a 57-54 advantage with 9:04 left to play. The Crusaders were still up 59-57 with 7:16 to go, before an 8-0 run put Lafayette back in front (65-59). Holy Cross responded once again, tying the game at 67-67 with 51.8 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Austin Butler. But Jaworski’s free throws put the Leopards on top for good, before a desperation jumper by sophomore guard Caleb Green was off the mark in the closing seconds.

Senior forward Jehyve Floyd led the Crusaders with 17 points and eight rebounds on the day. Butler added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while sophomore guard Jacob Grandison had 10 points, four assists and three steals. Jaworski led Lafayette with 18 points.

The Crusaders will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 13, when they play host to Colgate at 7:35 p.m.
