BALTIMORE – The Holy Cross women’s basketball team used a stellar second quarter to hold off Loyola (Md.) and win a key Patriot League matchup by a score of 58-48 on Saturday, February 9.

Junior Madalyn Smith had a stellar performance, scoring 15 points while going 4-for-4 from 3-point range. Sophomore Jenay Faulkner had seven assists while also adding in nine points and seven rebounds. Freshman Avery LaBarbera had 12 points, including 10 in the first half; junior Lauren Manis had 11 rebounds and eight points.

Holy Cross improves to 13-9 overall and 5-6 in the Patriot League. Loyola falls to 3-19 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

Trailing 22-16 with 6:23 to go in the second quarter, the Crusaders went on a 14-0 run to close out the frame. Swords hit a layup with 4:33 to go, and drained two free throws shortly thereafter to cut within two. Smith made a three with 2:36 left to give the Crusaders the lead for good – Smith scored eight of Holy Cross’ final 10 points of the quarter. In all, Holy Cross outscored the Greyhounds 21-5 in the second quarter to take a 30-22 lead headed into the break.

The Greyhounds threatened early in the third quarter, scoring six straight points and forcing a timeout from the Crusaders after Loyola made the score 30-28 less than three minutes in. Holy Cross hit the next nine points out of the timeout, capped by Smith’s third 3-pointer of the game with 3:43 left.

The Crusaders didn’t let the Greyhounds get any closer than within seven points for the remainder of the contest; Stephanie Karcz hit a fastbreak layup to begin the fourth quarter and make the score 43-36, but Holy Cross continued to make its baskets down the stretch, building its lead as high as 13, 57-44, with 2:17 left after Smith made a quick inbound play on the baseline that led to an easy basket for Faulkner.

Karcz impressed for Loyola, scoring 18 points and totaling 11 rebounds, five assists and six steals. Bri Betz-White was in double figures with 11 points.

The Crusaders return home on February 13 for a contest against Navy. Tipoff on Military Appreciation Night is set for 5:05 p.m., and the game will be on televised on NESN.
