WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore guard Caleb Green scored a career-high 25 points, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Lehigh 99-94 in overtime at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders fall to 10-6 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League with the loss, while Mountain Hawks improve to 10-4 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.

The game was tied at 13-13 early on, when Holy Cross scored 10 straight points to take a 23-13 lead. The Crusaders were later up 32-22 with eight minutes left in the first half, when they used a 14-6 spurt to increase their advantage to 18 points. Lehigh was able to trim the margin down to 12 points heading into the locker room at halftime.

Holy Cross was still up by 12 (65-53) with 17:17 left in regulation, when the Mountain Hawks went on a 23-1 run to pull in front 76-66 with 9:40 remaining. Lehigh later led 81-74 with 5:22 to go, when a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jacob Grandison and a pair of free throws from sophomore forward Matt Faw made it a two-point game. A layup by Grandison with 1:26 remaining put the Crusaders back in front (84-83), before the game went to overtime tied at 86-86.

In the extra session, the Mountain Hawks hit three-point field goals on three of their first four possessions to build a 95-88 lead. Holy Cross scored the next six points to trim the margin to one point (95-94), and had the ball back with less than a minute to play. But the Crusaders were unable to score, before Lehigh’s Lance Tejada hit a three-pointer with 8.8 seconds left to put the game away.

Holy Cross made 55.7 percent of its field goal attempts and 57.1 percent of its three-pointers on the night, but connected on just 60.9 percent of its free throws. The Mountain Hawks hit 47.7 percent of their shots from the floor, 45.5 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc and 73.3 percent of their foul shots.

Senior forward Jehyve Floyd finished the night with 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Sophomore guard Austin Butler (16 points), Grandison (11 points) and Faw (10 points) also scored in double figures. Tejada led Lehigh with 36 points, while hitting 10 of 14 three-point attempts.

The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 12, when they play host to Lafayette at 3:05 p.m.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Floyd’s 22 points tied his career high.
• Holy Cross’ 59 first half points were its most in a half against a Division I opponent since scoring 60 in the second half against Western Kentucky on Nov. 29, 1997.
• Floyd and Green gave the Crusaders two 20-point scorers in a game for the second time this year.
