Tilton scores a hat trick as field hockey tops Merrimack, 4-1
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team defeated Merrimack, 4-1, Friday evening at Hart Turf Field.
Senior Lexi Tilton led the way with a hat trick as she picked up each of her first three collegiate goals on the day. Senior Madeline Alderfer assisted on two of Tilton’s goals and scored on one of her own as well. Senior Philomena Fitzgerald and sophomore Lily Watson each had an assist on the day.
The scoring started in just the fourth minute of play as Alderfer sent in a hard shot off a corner and Tilton was there to redirect it in. Merrimack would even the score six minutes later.
Alderfer and Tilton hooked up again in the second quarter on an almost identical scoring play. Alderfer added her goal in the fourth quarter, the same frame Tilton got her third, to secure the win for the Crusaders.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Tilton is the first Crusader to earn a hat trick since Emily Loprete did so in a 4-0 win over Colgate last September.
- Senior goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante was called on less than usual today, but she was still solid when she had to be, making five saves on six shots on goal.
- Watson’s assist is the first point of her collegiate career.
- Holy Cross out shot Merrimack, 31-11, and out earned the Warriors in corners, 9-5.
The Crusaders will travel to the University of New Hampshire for their first road game of the season this Sunday, Sept. 8, for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
