Peter Burke Named Men's Lacrosse Head Coach

Holy Cross Athletics   05-29-2019

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross Director of Athletics Marcus Blossom has removed the interim tag from head men’s lacrosse coach Peter Burke, keeping Burke at the helm of the program he has guided since July 2018.

“This season was just a foundation for the success I am confident this program can achieve,” said Blossom. “Peter has done an excellent job moving our men’s lacrosse program forward on the field, and the positive impact he has had on the overall experience of our student-athletes is evident. I look forward to the program’s continued growth under Peter’s leadership.”

Burke, who took over as interim head coach prior to the 2018-19 academic year, led the Crusaders to their third Patriot League Tournament berth in the last four years this spring, securing the No. 5 seed after going 4-4 in league play and 7-7 overall. Among Holy Cross’ key victories were wins over Harvard, Brown and Navy, while the Crusaders also competed in tight battles with then-No. 1 Loyola, then-No. 18 Army West Point and then-No. 18 Boston University.

Under Burke in 2019, the Crusaders saw four players named All-Patriot League selections, including the program’s first-ever first-team pick in senior defenseman Matt Farrell. Midfielder Sean Mullaney, attack Kevin Kodzis and faceoff specialist Dan O’Connell – all juniors returning to the program in 2020 – each earned second-team accolades. O’Connell was also tabbed to the Academic All-Patriot League Team.

“I could not be more excited to continue serving as head men's lacrosse coach at Holy Cross, and I would like to thank Marcus Blossom for this opportunity,” said Burke. “I am eager to continue building upon this season’s positive momentum, and I look forward to working with our players, staff and administration to reach new heights in the future.”

Burke first joined the Crusaders as an assistant coach in 2015 after spending one season as an assistant at Emmanuel College in Boston. At Holy Cross, Burke served as the offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator prior to being elevated to interim head coach on June 29, 2018.

Burke joined the coaching ranks after a standout playing career at fellow Patriot League institution Bucknell, where he tallied 51 goals and 31 assists out of the midfield over his four-year career. Burke qualified for the 2011 NCAA Tournament with the Bison and played in four-consecutive Patriot League Tournaments.

A native of Walpole, Mass., Burke graduated from Bucknell in 2014 with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.
