WORCESTER, Mass. – For the third time this season, Holy Cross softball freshman pitcher Kelly Nelson has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league Tuesday morning.

It will be Nelson’s fifth overall honor from the league this year as she is a two-time Rookie of the Week as well as a two-time Pitcher of the Week.

Nelson went 1-0 in two appearances this week and pitched 10 innings while striking out 24 and not allowing a run, giving up only two hits and three walks. Only six of the 30 outs in the 10 innings she pitched were not recorded by strikeout. She posted a 0.00 ERA and allowed opponents to hit just .063.

In a complete game shutout against Hartford, Nelson allowed just one hit and one walk, striking out 16, leading the team to a 1-0 victory. Then, in the final game of the season, she drew the start against Lafayette. She went three innings, again giving up only one hit, and struck out eight. She retired only one Leopard by some other way than three strikes. The team won the game, 8-2, but Nelson didn’t pitch the required four innings to earn the win, thus leading to her 1-0 record instead of 2-0.

Nelson finished the season with a 2.45 ERA, a .218 opponent batting average, and 208 strikeouts, a single-season program record and the fifth-most ever by a Patriot League pitcher.
