Softball Earns Senior Day Sweep of Lafayette

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team swept Lafayette in a pair of games Saturday afternoon on the team’s Senior Day. The Crusaders downed the Leopards by two runs in both games, 4-2 and 3-1.

Alexandra Held got the start and the win in game one going the full seven innings and allowing just one earned run on five hits and two walks, while striking out nine. Olivia Sloane started the second game and also picked up the win going 4.2 innings and giving up one earned run on five hits and zero walks, while striking out one. Katie Barbarick earned the save in the second game going 2.1 innings, while not giving up a hit, walking one, and striking out one.

Held had her best day of the season at the plate as she went 3-for-6. Erin Bengston was 2-for-6 with her two hits being a home run and a double. She scored twice and had three RBI as well. Jackie Brewster was 2-for-5 with two runs and a double and Taylor Wahler was also 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Bailey Chavez, Sydney Behrens, Jessie Nagel, Hannah Horton, and Sydney Burr all had hits on the day as well. Nagel scored a run, Horton had an RBI, and Burr doubled. Molly Neil also scored once after coming on to pinch run.

First Inning:

  • The Leopards struck first when they walked to start the game, advanced to second on a sac bunt, and singled a run home.

Third:

  • Behrens started the bottom half off with a single up the middle and Brewster followed with a walk.
  • Chavez moved Neil, who came on to pinch run, and Brewster over to second and third with a sac bunt.
  • Nagel skied one to shallow right that the second baseman couldn’t handle, so two runs came home and Nagel made her way to third.
  • With two outs, Bengston crushed her third home run of the year over the left field fence to take a 4-1 lead.

Fifth:

  • Lafayette got one back when Natasha Miner tripled to right and scored on an error on the play.

Seventh:

  • The Leopards started the seventh with a single, but Held would retire the next three batters to claim the win.

First Inning:

  • The Crusaders scored all three of their runs in the first inning.
  • Brewster started things off with a single.
  • With two outs, Wahler got an infield single to third and Brewster scored on the play.
  • Bengston doubled in her next at bat, scoring Wahler, and Held would get an infield single of her own, pushing Bengston to third.
  • Horton lofted one over the third baseman’s head for a single, driving Bengston home.

Fifth:

  • Sloane kept Lafayette scoreless until the fifth when Hannah Lee hit a solo home run to left.

Seventh:

  • Barbarick came on in relief and retired all three Leopards in the final frame with ground outs to earn her second save of the season.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Wahler just needs one more at bat tomorrow to have the most all-time in program history.
  • Bengston’s double today gave her 15 on the season, tying the program record for most in a single season.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will finish its season with a single game against Lafayette tomorrow, beginning at 3 p.m.
