Game 2 Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Holy Cross softball team lost two games on the opening day of the USF Series Tournament on Friday.

The Crusaders trailed 11-1 in the fifth inning against Penn State before falling 11-3, and they were behind 6-0 in the sixth against Villanova before tying the game at seven, but losing 10-7.

Taylor Wahler had another strong day, going 4-for-7 with two runs and an RBI. Jackie Brewster was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Erin Bengston also went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Jessie Nagel led all Crusaders with three RBI. Hannah Horton and Alexandra Held each had two hits, an RBI, and Held also scored a run.

Game 1 vs. Penn State

Kelly Nelson started out strong and struck out the side in the first inning, but the Nittany Lions offense came alive in the second and put four on the board. They followed that up with another four in the third to take an 8-0 lead.

The Crusaders got one back in the bottom half of the third when Brewster hit a two-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Wahler singled her in for the first Holy Cross run of the day.

Penn State added three in the fourth to go up 11-1. Holy Cross would battle in the bottom of the fifth when Bengston drove Bailey Chavez and Brewster home with a bases-loaded grounder to short, but the rally ended there.

Game 2 vs. Villanova

Second Inning:

  • The Wildcats struck first with a solo home run to left field.

Third:

  • Villanova added a second with a triple with a runner on.

Fourth:

  • Villanova loaded the bases with no outs and scored one on a sac fly, but a strikeout and ground out would end the inning without any further damage.

Fifth:

  • The Wildcats doubled their lead to six in the fifth.

Sixth:

  • The comeback started in the sixth with a Wahler double with one out.
  • Bengston followed it up with a grounder to the left side where both her and Wahler were safe after the shortstop chose to try and pick Wahler off instead of throwing to first.
  • For a second time, a Villanova defender tried to throw Wahler out instead of making the routine play, and as a result, Wahler was safe at third and Bella Jankowski at first, loading the bases.
  • Jessie Nagel singled down the right field line, bringing two home.
  • Held then reached on an error that also scored Jankowski.
  • After Horton was hit by a pitch the bases were loaded again. Chavez then walked to bring home another run.
  • Brewster hit a sac fly to center field to score the fifth and final run of the frame.
  • Leading 6-5, Villanova added a solo home run in the top half of the inning for good measure.

Seventh:

  • Wahler started the inning with a bunt single. Bengston followed it up by being hit by a pitch.
  • Jankowski singled in the next at bat to load the bases.
  • Nagel grounded to short so the Wildcats were able to get one out at third, but Wahler scored at the same time.
  • Horton hit a single to right field to tie the game.
  • In the final half inning, the Wildcats hit a three-run home run to dash the Crusaders hopes and win the game, 10-7.
