Women's Hockey Names End-of-Season Award Winners
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women’s ice hockey team presented its end-of-season awards last Saturday morning at its season-ending banquet. Senior captain Julie Matthias and freshman goaltender Jada Brenon were named co-MVPs and senior Maeve Reilly won the Seventh Player award.
Matthias finished the year with four goals and seven assists for 11 points. She was tied for the team lead in assists and for second on the team in points. In the team’s first Hockey East win, 5-3 over then-No. 5 Northeastern, Matthias recorded a career-high four assists and earned Hockey East co-Player of the Week honors for her efforts. She also had three points from two goals and an assist in a 4-3 loss at UConn. Matthias wraps up her career as a Crusader tied for eighth all-time in goals (45), tied for tenth all-time in game-winning goals (8), and third all-time in short-handed goals (5).
Brenon started 20 games in goal during her freshman season. She made a career-high 54 saves against New Hampshire on Nov. 17. She averaged 32.6 saves per game and her 669 saves on the season rank second all-time in a single season in program history. Brenon earned the win against then-No. 5 Northeastern and two of the Crusaders’ three ties on the season, 1-1 at RIT and 2-2 at home against Maine.
The Seventh Player award is given to a Crusader who exemplifies hard work and determination, and is constantly pushing herself and her teammates to exceed expectations. Reilly finished the year with six goals and three assists for nine points. She was tied for second on the team in goals and tied for first in power play goals (3). She had the game-winner against then-No. 5 Northeastern and recorded a goal and an assist against Merrimack back on Nov. 10.
Holy Cross finished its inaugural Hockey East Season on Feb. 22 at home against Providence.
