WORCESTER, Mass.Holy Cross will open its 2019 season on Feb. 9 at 3:30 p.m. against Providence. The Crusaders and Friars will face off on Kuzniewski Field.

 

Holy Cross in 2018

• The Crusaders finished the 2018 season with a 4-9 record and 2-6 Patriot League mark.

• Holy Cross went 3-2 in their final five games of th season, defeating Quinnipiac, Colgate, and Lafayette.

• On Feb. 20, Holy Cross recorded the program’s first win over Harvard in a thrilling 10-9 overtime win in Cambridge.

• Head coach Peter Burke has taken the reigns of the program, after being named interim head coach on June 29. Burke previously served as an assistant coach for three seasons on the Hill.

• As a team, Holy Cros scored 6.69 goals per game and posted 36.3 shots per game. The team finished with a .565 face off winning percentage.

 

Key Returners

• After graduating just four seniors, Holy Cross returns much of its offensive production.

• The Crusaders return 87.3% of their goal scoring and 81.6% of their overall point production.

Kevin Kodzis returns as the team’s 2018 leading scorer (21-7-28).

• Four of the team’s five Crusaders’ top scorers return to the field in 2019: Kodzis, Drew Babiak, Justin Lynskey, and Sean Mullaney.

• Earning a 2018 All-Patriot League second team, Matt Farrell, returns to Holy Cross’ defensive core. Farrell was also selected to the 2019 All-Patriot League Preseason Team.

• Dan O’Connell returns to the face off after a breakout season in 2018. O’Connell posted a .574 winning percentage, having taken all but five face offs for the Crusaders.

Jonathan Tesoro, who started in all 13 games last season returns to the goal. Tesoro owned a 10.78 goals against average and .445 save percentage in the 2018 season.

 

Newcomers

• The Crusaders will be led by head coach Peter Burke and two new assistant coaches: Shayne Lynch and Ian Farley.

• Burke also added 16 rookies to the roster.

• At attack, Herschel Halesworth, Kilian Morrissey, Paul Miller, and Will Spangenberg join the squad.

Matt DeSisto, Jack Dougherty, Dermot Quinn, Chase Maitland, and Peter Murphy join the team as midfielders. Brandon Rizzuto and Brendan McKenzie come in as face off specialists.

• On defense, Andrew Ponsetto, Chris Conlin, Louis Fiacco, and Ridge Driscoll join the Crusaders defensive core and A.J. Fox joins the goaltenders.

 

Scouting Providence

• Providence comes to Holy Cross with a 0-1 record after opening the season against Boston University on Feb. 2. The Friars fell, 8-7.

• The Friars were picked to finish fifth in the BIG EAST preseason poll. tate Boyce and Alex George were named to the 2019 Preseason All-BIG EAST team.

• Nick Hatzipetrakos leads Providence’s attack, having scoring 22 goals in his 2018 campaign.

• Brendan Kearns and Ryan Nawrocki led the Friars in their loss against Boston University, each picking up two points with one goal and one assist.

• The Friars saw seven different goal-scorers in the Feb. 2 game.

• The Crusaders will play at Vermont at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16.
