WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team downed Niagara, 4-1. Johnny Coughlin marked a career high with two goals in the game and Erik Gordon made 32 saves. The Crusaders improve to 4-11-3, 4-8-2 AHA and Niagara drops to 8-12-3, 7-7-3 AHA.

Both teams got on the board in the opening period as Niagara tallied a power play goal nearing the midpoint of the period. Holy Cross’ Johnny Coughlin evened up the game as he sent a puck on net from the neutral zone. The shots were even, 7-7, through the first 20 minutes.

Holy Cross jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in the second period as Michael Laffin put the Crusaders ahead less than a minute and a half into the middle frame. Coughlin doubled up the Crusaders’ lead with his second of the night. Erik Gordon turned aside all 16 Niagara shots he faced in the second period.

In the third period, the game was relatively even as both teams put up nine shots on goal. With 2:10 remaining in the game, Niagara pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. Holy Cross defended the six-on-five and Peter Crinella put the puck in on the empty net to secure the win, 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1-0 NU (1st – 11:17, PP): Ludwig Stenlund took a slap shot from the top left faceoff circle that made its way to the near corner of the net.

1-1 HC (1st – 12:35, EV): Charlie Barrow collected the puck in transition and fed Johnny Coughlin, who skated over the red line and dumped the puck on goal. Coughlin’s shot handcuffed Niagara’s Brian Wilson and bounced in.

2-1 HC (2nd – 1:23, EV): Peter Crinella and Neil Robinson forechecked in offensive zone and set up Michael Laffin, who collected the puck at the top of the faceoff circle and waited for his shot and scored his fifth of the season.

3-1 HC (2nd – 3:51, EV): Again with offensive zone pressure, Conner Jean worked the puck out of the corner to Pete Kessel on the half wall. Kessel fed Coughlin on the point for his second of the night.

4-1 HC (3rd – 19:14, EN): At the top of the defensive faceoff circle Peter Crinella stole the puck and fired a long shot into the open net.
