WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross women’s hockey team tied Maine, 2-2, on Saturday afternoon. Holy Cross took a 2-1 lead in the third period after playing down a goal for much of the game. The Black Bears scored with 0.4 on the clock to send the game to overtime. The Crusaders move to 1-18-3 and 1-14-1 in Hockey East and the Black Bears move to 12-8-2 and 5-8-2 in league play.

Just over six minutes into the opening period, Maine capitalized on a five-on-three power play opportunity to score the lone goal of the period. Maine held the advantage in shots in the first period, 11-7. Jada Brenon recorded her 12th start of the season and turned aside 10 shots in the first 20 minutes.

The second period was quiet as neither team converted. Maine had a slight advantage in shots, 11-10. Holy Cross had two power play opportunities and generated chances on each.

On the power play in the third period, Holy Cross generated a great opportunity that was stopped by the Maine defense, but Maeve Reilly followed up the play with her sixth of the season. Julie Matthias then put the Crusaders up, 2-1 on a rush after Hannah Gillis broke up a play in the defensive zone.

Maine tallied the game-tying goal with 0.4 to go on the clock after skating for nearly two minutes with an empty net to force the game into overtime.

Each team recorded one shot on goal in the five minute overtime frame, but neither converted. The Black Bears posted 38 shots to the Crusaders’ 24. Brenon capped off the game with 36 saves.
