Mitch Collett scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season less than two minutes into the opening frame to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. Erik Gordon turned aside all 10 shots he faced in the first 20 minutes. Holy Cross held the shot advantage, 11-10 in the first period.

The Crusaders doubled their lead in the second period as Jack Surowiec scored his fourth of the season. Gordon continued a strong effort in net as he stopped another nine Niagara shots.

The third period saw an offensive response from the Purple Eagles. Niagara tallied two goals in the opening six minutes to even the game, 2-2. As the Crusaders went on their second power play of the day, the Purple Eagles capitalized on a two-on-one around Gordon to take the lead, 3-2.

Neil Robinson scored the game-tying goal with less than one second remaining as the Crusaders skated six-on-five. The Purple Eagles outshot the Crusaders, 11-7, in the third period.

Overtime saw three shots for each team but no one was able to convert. Holy Cross killed a penalty in the five-minute frame.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1-0 HC (1st – 1:53, EV): Mitch Collett stole the puck on the Niagara blue line and skated in on a breakaway to score through Niagara’s Brian Wilson’s five-hole.

2-0 HC (2nd – 15:10, EV): Michael Laffin forced another neutral zone turnover from the Purple Eagles and sent Anthony Vincent into the offensive zone along the half wall. Vincent fired a quick shot off of Wilson’s pad and put the rebound right in front of Jack Surowiec to one-time into the net.

2-1 NU (3rd – 0:57, EV): Ludwig Stenlund found Niko Kovachis on the point for a one-time goal.

2-2 NU (3rd – 5:29, EV): Reed Robinson tipped the puck past Gordon’s glove just outside the crease from a center point shot.

3-2 NU (3rd – 9:15, SH): Niagara’s Ludwig Stenlund tapped in the puck on the back door as the Purple Eagles found an odd man rush on the penalty kill.

3-3 HC (3rd -19:59, EV EA): With Gordon pulled, the Crusaders pressured offensively and the puck was tied up behind the net. Collett worked the puck out and passed the puck across the back of the net to Laffin, who quickly sent a feed to the front of the net. Waiting in the slot was Neil Robinson to slam home the puck with less than one second remaining in the game.
