BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Holy Cross volleyball team split the first day at the Blackbird Invitational taking down George Washington (3-0) and losing to LIU Brooklyn (3-1). Sophomore Rachel Harding led the team in both matches with two double-doubles on the day. With the win against George Washington, the Crusaders recorded the first win of the season. 


Harding recorded 11 kills and 12 digs against George Washington to led the team and snag her second double-double of the season. 

Freshman Johnna Shamley and sophomore Katie Kerins aided Harding on the offensive side of the ball with nine kills from Shamley and eight from Kerins. Holy Cross recorded nine team blocks, 66 digs and 44 kills against the Colonials. Sophomore Sophie VanSeveren tallied 26 digs on defense. 

Senior Allie Barry and sophomore Clare Honan added six kills each in the match. Sophomore Shannon Dwyer led the setters with 19 assists, and sophomore Kathleen Philo was right behind her with 18 assists.


The Crusaders lost the first match of the tournament to LIU Brooklyn in four sets. Holy Cross won the third set (25-24) to keep the match alive, but LIU Brooklyn closed out the match in the fourth set (26-24). 

Sophomore Rachel Harding led the Crusaders with her first double-double of the season - her 14 kills and 11 digs were both season highs. Sophmore Katie Kerins had a solid offensive match with 15 kills, which was also a season high. Holy Cross notched eight team blocks compared to LIU Brooklyn's seven, but the Crusaders came up short in the dig and kill team categories. LIU Brooklyn notched 63 kills, while Holy Cross recorded 47, and the Blackbirds had 81 digs compared to the Crusaders' 74. 


Holy Cross will take on the University of South Florida on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 4 p.m. in the last match of the Blackbird Invitational.
