Field hockey falls to No. 23 Fairfield, 3-1
WORCESTER, Mass. - The Holy Cross field hockey team fell to No. 23 Fairfield, 3-1, at Hart Turf Field. The Crusaders fall to 5-5 on the year as the Stags improve to 9-2.
Holy Cross played a strong Fairfield side tough all day long. The Crusaders took the lead in the second quarter when Philomena Fitzgerald found Minke Koomen in the circle who slipped a ball under the goalie and into the bottom left corner of the goal. They would carry the lead into halftime.
The Stags would come on strong in the second half, tying the game in the third quarter thanks to a goal from Page Lowry, and taking the lead in the fourth with two more from Danielle Profita and Julianna Kratz.
The Crusaders managed four shots in the final frame, but couldn’t get any to go, despite a golden chance off a corner where Gabby Venezia’s redirection clanked off the post.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
- Marcia LaPlante made six saves on the day, three of which came within ten seconds of each other in the second quarter. She kicked the first away, sprawled flat out to make the second, and leapt into the air to tap away the third.
- Koomen’s goal gave her a team-leading six on the year.
The Crusaders return to Patriot League action next Friday, Oct. 11, when they travel to American for a 4 p.m. contest.
