Box Score

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Holy Cross volleyball team fell to Colgate, 3-0, on Thursday, Oct. 3.

Junior outside hitter Renee LeBlanc and junior middle blocker Katie Kerins each had five kills to lead the Crusaders (3-15, 0-3 Patriot League), with Kerins also chipping in three blocks. Junior libero Sophie VanSeveren had 14 digs, while junior setter Shannon Dwyer added in 12 assists.

Alex Stein led Colgate with 12 kills and 10 digs, and Julia Kurowski recorded 28 assists for the Raiders.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Colgate jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and built their advantage to 17-4 before a kill from sophomore outside hitter Regan Wright, a Colgate attack error and kill from sophomore outside hitter Johnna Shamley stopped the run by the Raiders. Colgate’s lead grew back up to 13 points at 21-8, but the Crusaders forced three straight attack errors by the Raiders to cut within 21-11. However, Colgate didn’t let Holy Cross come any closer, taking a 25-13 win in the opening frame.
  • Holy Cross was within 5-3 early after a kill by Kerins, but Colgate went on a 5-0 run to extend its lead to 10-3. After Holy Cross cut within 12-9 following a kill by junior outside hitter Rachel Harding, the Raiders took 13 of the next 17 points to go up 2-0 in the match.
  • The Raiders opened the third set with a 3-0 lead, but Holy Cross had three straight kills – including a pair from LeBlanc – to even things up. The Crusaders’ lead grew to 8-4 after a kill by Harding and an ace by junior middle blocker Clare Honan, prompting a Colgate timeout. The Raiders committed back-to-back errors out of the timeout, but rattled off the next three points to cut within 10-7. With Holy Cross leading 15-10 after a service ace by Dwyer, Colgate went on an 8-0 run to go up 18-15; the Crusaders responded with a 4-0 run of their own, with three of the points coming off kills by LeBlanc. Holy Cross held a 21-20 lead after an error by the Raiders, but Colgate took five straight points to close out the sweep.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • All five of LeBlanc’s kills came in the third set, marking her second-highest kill total of the season.
  • Dwyer has recorded at least one service ace in six of her last seven matches.
  • Kerins has posted three or more blocks in seven matches this season.

UP NEXT:

  • Holy Cross heads to Army West Point on Saturday, Oct. 5 for a 7 p.m. match against the Black Knights.
