Nelson Sets Single-Season Strikeout Record, Held Moves to Second All-Time as Softball Splits with Hartford

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team split a pair of games against Hartford Wednesday evening. Kelly Nelson recorded her 200th strikeout this season to set a single-season program record and Alexandra Held moved to second place all-time in program history with her 289th career strikeout.

Nelson started the second game and went the full seven innings, shutting out the Hawks and striking out 16, while allowing just one hit and one run. Held pitched the first and also went the full seven innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out eight.

Sydney Behrens had two hits on the day to lead the team. Jackie Brewster and Taylor Wahler each tripled, both of their team-leading fifths of the season. Wahler scored and Brewster had an RBI. Erin Bengston, Bailey Chavez, and Jessie Nagel all also had hits on the day.

Fourth Inning:

  • The Hawks struck first when Kiana Harris doubled a run home.

Fifth:

  • After reaching base on a bunt single, Lily Pencer scored from second on a Danielle Rocheleau single.

Seventh:

  • Behrens started the last half inning with a single to right and Molly Neil came on to pinch run. Hannah Horton followed with a walk.
  • Olivia Sloane moved them both over with a sac bunt.
  • One run scored when Held grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Hartford got the second out at third.
  • The Hawks were able to get the final out to stifle the Crusaders' comeback.

Fourth Inning:

  • With one out, Wahler tripled to right center.
  • In the next at bat, Brewster hit a ground ball to the first baseman who tried to get Wahler out at home, but she slid under the tag to grab the 1-0 lead.

Sixth:

  • The Hawks tripled with one out, their only hit of the game, but Nelson got a strikeout and a fly out to keep them off the board

Seventh:

  • Nelson sandwiched a fly out to center between two strikeouts in the final frame to seal the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Nelson becomes the first Crusader to ever strikeout 200 batters in a season.
  • Wahler’s triple gives her 13 in her career, one short of tying the program record.
  • If Wahler has six at bats this coming weekend, she will be the new program leader in at bats all-time.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will wrap up its season this weekend with a Patriot League series against Lafayette, beginning Saturday, May 4 at 12:05 p.m.
