Five Crusaders Record Multiple Hits, but Softball Falls to Lehigh, 8-7

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team fell to Lehigh, 8-7, in the final game of the series Sunday morning. The Crusaders held a four-run lead after two innings, but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Mountain Hawks.

Holy Cross had two players go 3-for-3 at the plate in Jessie Nagel and Sydney Behrens. Nagel had a home run, two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Behrens had two RBI and was hit by a pitch. Erin Bengston was 2-for-3 with a double, a run, two RBI, and a walk. Taylor Wahler and Jackie Brewster each went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

The Crusaders used three pitchers in the game with Olivia Sloane getting the start. She went two innings, giving up four earned runs and striking out one. Alexandra Held was the first reliever and went 2.1 innings, also giving up four earned runs. Kelly Nelson finished out the game and threw 2.2 hitless innings, striking out one.

First Inning:

  • The Mountain Hawks got two in the opening frame thanks to a walk, a stolen base, and a pair of doubles.
  • The Crusaders answered in a big way, starting with Brewster’s infield single to short.
  • Bailey Chavez moved her over on a sac bunt and Brewster scored on Wahler’s single.
  • Bengston drove both Wahler and Nagel, who also singled, home to take the lead, 3-2.
  • They weren’t done there, Hannah Horton was hit by a pitch in the next at bat and she and Bengston were moved over to second and third on Sydney Burr’s sac bunt.
  • Behrens made it 5-2 when she got her first hit of the day, a single to right.

Second:

  • Holy Cross added another to make it 6-2 off of Nagel’s second home run of the season, an absolute bomb to left field.

Third:

  • Lehigh used five hits and three walks in the inning to briefly tie the game at six.
  • The Crusaders took the lead back in the bottom half when Brewster singled home Molly Neil, who had come on to pinch run for Behrens after she was hit by a pitch.

Fifth:

  • After two singles and a triple, the Mountain Hawks would regain the lead, 8-7.

Seventh:

  • Horton started the inning by taking her second hit-by-pitch. Carley Boothe came on to pinch run.
  • Burr moved her over on a sac bunt and Behrens followed with her third hit of the day to put runners on first and third with only one out.
  • Lehigh was able to get a double play to end the inning and preserve the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Bengston’s double gives her 14 on the season, one short of tying the program’s single-season record.
  • Nelson’s one strikeout moves her within nine of setting a new single-season record.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will face Hartford this Wednesday, May 1, at home for a doubleheader in the Crusaders’ final non-conference games of the season.
