Softball Drops Two to Lehigh

Holy Cross Athletics   04-27-2019

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team lost to Lehigh twice Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders dropped the first, 4-2, and pushed the second game to nine innings, but ultimately fell, 2-0.

Alexandra Held started the first game and went six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits and one walk, while striking out seven. Kelly Nelson came on in relief in the first, and pitched the entire second, for a total of ten innings, allowing three earned runs on 12 hits and three walks and striking out eight.

Jackie Brewster had two hits in the first game and Jessie Nagel doubled and drove in two runs. Sydney Burr and Held also had a hit each, while Held scored once, as did Bailey Chavez.

Second Inning:

  • The Mountain Hawks got on the board first when they scored once in the second thanks to one hit and a couple of errors.

Third:

  • Held walked and Chavez reached on an error with two outs.
  • Nagel would double to left to score both runners and take a 2-1 lead.

Fifth:

  • Lehigh would single to start the inning and followed it up by stealing second.
  • The Mountain Hawks scored on a double down the left field line to tie the game at two.

Seventh:

  • In the top half, Lehigh would score twice on three hits to take a two-run lead.
  • In the bottom half, Held singled to start, but the next three batters were retired in order.

Fifth Inning:

  • Lehigh loaded the bases with two hits and a walk.
  • Nelson got out of the inning thanks to a beautiful diving catch by Taylor Wahler at short on a sinking line drive.

Seventh:

  • The Mountain Hawks doubled to center with two outs and the Crusaders chose to intentionally walk the next batter.
  • The game plan worked as Nelson got the final out of the inning on a looking K.

Ninth:

  • Lehigh put the first three batters of the frame on to load the bases.
  • The next two Mountain Hawks were retired with a fly out and a line out.
  • Lexi van Ooyen hit a grounder that just squeezed its way through the infield to bring two home.
  • Brewster walked in the bottom half, but the Crusaders couldn’t generate any more offense.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Held’s seven strikeouts bring her career total to 281, just eight shy of taking over second place on the program’s all-time list.
  • Nelson’s eight strikeouts give her 183 on the season, 10 short of setting a new single-season program record.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will finish the series against Lehigh tomorrow, Sunday, April 28, at 9 a.m.
