Nelson Fans 19 as Softball Splits with Maine

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team split a pair of games against the University of Maine Thursday afternoon. The Crusaders dropped the first game, 8-7, after leading for five and a half innings, but bounced back to take game two, 3-2.

Kelly Nelson earned the win in game two by striking out 19, her second-highest single-game total of the season. She went the full seven innings, giving up just two earned runs on four hits and a walk. Nelson recorded every single out in the game, except for two, with a strikeout.

Jackie Brewster, Taylor Wahler, and Bailey Chavez were all 3-for-7 on the day. Brewster scored three times, walked once, and had two triples. Wahler scored once, drove in two, and had a double and a triple. Chavez scored once, had one RBI, walked once, and doubled. Sydney Burr and Erin Bengston each had two hits on the day. Burr had an RBI, while Bengston scored once, had two RBI, and one double. Jessie Nagel hit her first collegiate home run in the first game.

First Inning:

  • Brewster opened the game with a triple, Nagel walked shortly after, and Bengston doubled to bring Brewster home and push Nagel to third.
  • Nagel came home on a ground out by Wahler and Bengston scored on a passed ball.

Fourth:

  • The Black Bears tied things up on Maddie Decker’s two-out, three-run home run.

Fifth:

  • With two outs, Brewster hit her second triple of the game.
  • Chavez followed with a single to drive Brewster home and retake the lead.
  • Nagel took the first pitch she saw over the right field fence for her first collegiate home run and to give Holy Cross a 6-3 lead.
  • Maine used three singles to get one back and shrink the lead to two.

Sixth:

  • The Black Bears took the lead in the sixth when they scored four in the frame thanks to a couple hits and a few errors.

Seventh:

  • The Crusaders loaded the bases with no outs after Held and Brewster singled and Chavez walked.
  • Bengston drove one run in on a ground ball, but the Black Bears ended the threat there to seal the win.

Fourth Inning:

  • Wahler tripled with two outs and Alyssa Gutierrez walked in the next at bat.
  • Wahler scored the first run of the game when Hannah Horton grounded one to the pitcher who couldn’t field it cleanly.
  • Burr made it 2-0 when she singled to left field and Gutierrez scored from second.

Fifth:

  • Brewster started the inning with a walk and Chavez singled, popping it over the third baseman.
  • Bengston hit a hard grounder to third that was too hot to handle and all three base runners were safe.
  • Wahler drove Brewster home with an infield single. The Black Bears were able to end the inning with only letting the one run across.

Sixth:

  • Keely Clark made it a one-run game when she homered to left with a runner on for Maine.

Seventh:

  • Nelson struck out the side in the final inning to grab the game two victory.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Nelson is currently in third place on the program’s single season strikeout list with 156. She needs one more to tie second place and 37 to set a new record. The current mark was set by Genoa Grosch in 1999 when she recorded 192.
  • Chavez has extended her on-base streak to 12 games after reaching safely in both of today’s contests. It is a new team-high this season.
  • Wahler has improved her hitting streak to six games, also a new team-high.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will take on Colgate in an important Patriot League series this weekend beginning Saturday at 12 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y.
