Held Throws One-Hitter as Softball Takes Two From Rhode Island

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team beat Rhode Island twice Tuesday afternoon. The Crusaders won the first game, 6-1, and took the second, 3-1.

On the day, the Holy Cross pitching staff allowed only two runs on four hits, while striking out 20. Alexandra Held was an inning away from a perfect game until the Rams got their first and only hit against her in the bottom of the seventh. She went seven innings giving up only the one hit, no earned runs, no walks, and striking out 10. In the second game, Kelly Nelson went five innings, giving up two hits, one walk, no earned runs, and striking out seven. Katie Barbarick came on in relief of the second game and went two innings, giving up one hit, one run, one walk, and striking out three. 

The Crusader bats had a good day as well, highlighted by Erin BengstonThe freshman went 5-for-8 with three runs, two RBI, and three doubles. Taylor Wahler was 3-for-7 with two RBI and a double. Jackie Brewster went 2-for-6 with two runs, an RBI, and a walk. Bailey Chavez had a hit, three walks, and a run on the day. Both Molly Neil and Nelson picked up their first collegiate hits in the first game.

First Inning:

  • The Crusaders started the inning with back-to-back hits by Brewster and Chavez.
  • Brewster scored on a single down the first base line by Bengston.
  • Wahler brought two home on a single up the middle to take a 3-0 lead.

Fourth:

  • Brewster drew a two-out walk.
  • Chavez followed with a grounder to second base that the fielder bobbled. Brewster advanced to third, and on the throw to third to try to get her, Chavez made it to second. The Ram third baseman threw it to second, and on that throw, Brewster came home.

Fifth:

  • Bengston started the inning with her third hit of the game and Wahler moved her over with a sac bunt.
  • Nelson pinch hit in the next at bat, and recorded her first collegiate hit when she hit a grounder down the first base line, avoided the tag, and beat the throw.
  • Neil followed with her own first collegiate hit, also pinch hitting, as well as her first collegiate RBI as Bengston scored on the play.
  • Brewster made it 6-0 when she smoked one to first that knocked the first baseman over, and brought Nelson home for her first collegiate run scored.

Seventh:

  • The perfect game bid was spoiled in the final frame as the Rams finally made some contact and pushed a run across.

First Inning:

  • Chavez walked and Bengston followed it up with her second double of the day that brought Chavez home.
  • Wahler then hit a double of her own to score Bengston.

Second:

  • Sydney Burr singled to right and moved over to second on Held’s walk.
  • Brewster hit a grounder up the middle that the second baseman got to, but couldn’t control, and Burr scored from second.

Sixth:

  • The Rams loaded the bases with no outs and scored on a grounder to second when the Crusaders elected to get the out at first.
  • With runners on second and third, Barbarick struck out the next two batters to get out of the jam.

Seventh:

  • Barbarick got two ground outs in the last frame and struck out the final batter to seal the win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Chavez has now reached base in ten straight games.
  • Held's ten strikeouts ties a season-high.
  • Nelson's seven strikeouts puts her at 137 on the season, tied for third most in a single season in program history.
  • Barbarick earned the save in the second game, the first of her collegiate career.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will travel to Maine this Thursday to take on the Black Bears in the squad’s second non-conference doubleheader of the week.
