Softball Scores Nine Runs in Second Half of Split With Siena

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team split a pair of games at Siena Sunday afternoon. The Crusaders dropped the first game, 6-2, but bounced back to take the second, 9-7.

Taylor Wahler was on fire as she went 5-for-7 on the day with five runs, an RBI, two triples, a double, and two stolen bases. Jackie Brewster was 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, a double, a stolen base, and a walk. Erin Bengston went 2-for-4 with her second home run of the season, scored twice, had an RBI, and walked twice. Hannah Horton, Bailey Chavez, and Alyssa Gutierrez each had two hits on the day with Horton recording three RBI and Chavez one walk.

In the circle, Alexandra Held picked up her second win of the season and Kelly Nelson her second save. Held struck out five on the day and Nelson seven. Both allowed four earned runs.

The nine runs in the second game marks the Crusaders’ highest run total of the season and the 11 hits ties a season high.

First Inning:

  • With two on in the bottom of the first, the Saints doubled to bring two home and take the lead.

Second:

  • Wahler led off the second with a triple and was immediately brought home off of Brewster’s double.
  • Sydney Behrens moved Brewster over to third on a sac bunt and the Crusaders tied it up on Horton’s squeeze bunt that scored Brewster.

Fifth & Sixth:

  • Siena strung together three hits in both innings to score two in each frame.

Seventh:

  • For the second inning in a row, Holy Cross had two on with two outs, but couldn’t push any across.

First Inning:

  • Bengston started the game off with a single to right and Chavez moved her over with a sac bunt.
  • Wahler tripled Bengston home, and Brewster followed with a single that scored Wahler.
  • In the bottom half, Siena had a five-hit inning and took the lead, 3-2.

Second:

  • Bengston responded for Holy Cross with a solo shot, her second homer of the year, to tie things up at three.

Third:

  • Wahler started the inning with a double and was moved over to third on Brewster’s sac bunt.
  • Wahler scored on another squeeze by Horton to make it 4-3, Crusaders.

Fourth:

  • Another five-hit inning led to four runs for the Saints who took a 7-4 lead.

Fifth:

  • Wahler and Brewster started the inning with back-to-back singles and on Hortons bunt, the pitcher made a throwing error to first base which brought Whaler home and got Brewster to third.
  • Molly Neil, who pinch ran for Horton, scored on Sydney Burr’s sac fly by sticking a foot through the catcher’s legs to avoid the tag.
  • Holy Cross tied the game at seven when Carley Boothe scored on Gutierrez’s infield single.

Sixth:

  • Wahler reached on a fielding error with one out and stole second.
  • Brewster was hit by a pitch to put two on with one out.
  • Wahler and Brewster successfully executed a double steal to put two runners in scoring position.
  • Horton bunted down the left field line for a single, scoring both Wahler and Brewster.

Seventh:

  • After a leadoff double, Nelson sat the next three batters down to give the Crusaders the win.

 

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will host Bucknell in a three-game series next Saturday and Sunday, April 13 and 14
