Central Connecticut Comes From Behind to Beat Softball, 6-3

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team fell to Central Connecticut, 6-3, in eight innings Thursday evening. The Crusaders took an early lead and even regained the lead after the Blue Devils tied things up, but could not hold on in the end.

Bailey Chavez was 1-for-2 on the day with a run and an RBI. She reached base three times with two walks and a single. Sydney Behrens was 1-for-4 with a triple and a run. Taylor Wahler went 1-for-3 and walked once.

In the circle, Kelly Nelson struck out eight and didn’t allow a hit through four innings. Central Connecticut’s bats came alive after that and eventually strung together nine hits.

First Inning:

  • Chavez walked to start the frame and advanced to second on Alyssa Gutierrez’s sac bunt.
  • On a passed ball strikeout, Chavez made it to third and then came home when the catcher made an error on the throw down to first.

Fourth:

  • With two outs, Holy Cross loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch, a walk, and a Carley Boothe single to right.
  • Chavez brought Hannah Horton home when she singled to left.

Fifth:

  • The Blue Devils loaded the bases themselves after a walk and a couple slow dribblers for infield singles.
  • They would hit a deep fly to left that scored their first run and then singled to bring home the second.

Sixth:

  • Behrens tripled to right field and the second baseman went out to cut off the throw. When she turned to toss the ball back to the infield, it slipped out of her hand and rolled about 20 feet away from the closest fielder. Behrens easily made it home to take the lead back, 3-2.

Seventh:

  • Central Connecticut used back-to-back doubles to tie the game at three.

Eighth:

  • The Blue Devils used four hits in the top of the eighth to take the lead, 6-3.
  • The Crusaders couldn’t respond and were sat down in order to end the game.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross will travel to Siena for a doubleheader this Sunday, April 7.
