Game 2 Box Score

WORCETSER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team split a pair of games against Army, winning the first by a score of 2-0, but dropping the second, 2-1, on Sunday.

Kelly Nelson threw a no-hitter in the first game as she went the full seven innings, striking out five and walking two, while not allowing a hit all game. It was the first time the freshman has kept an opponent hitless in her collegiate career, and the first time the Crusaders have done so since Gennifer Durham’s perfect game in 2013. In the second game, Alexandra Held got the start and went 5.2 innings and allowed just two earned runs on three hits.

Offensively, Taylor Wahler led the way going 3-for-6 on the day with a run, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Erin Bengston was 2-for-6 with an RBI and Bailey Chavez went 2-for-5 and scored one run.

After falling once to the Black Knights yesterday, the Crusaders drop the series, one game to two.

Game 1:

First Inning:

  • Jackie Brewster started the game with a single and moved to second on Chavez’s ground out.
  • Wahler drove Brewster in with a single of her own to give the Crusaders an early lead.

Sixth:

  • Chavez singled with one out in the inning and Wahler followed it up with her second hit of the day to put runners on first and second.
  • Bengston singled to center field and Chavez came around to make it 2-0.
  • Holy Cross would load the bases, but after a pitching change, Army was able to end the inning.

Seventh:

  • Nelson sat the first two batters in the bottom of the seventh down on strikeouts.
  • After a walk, Nelson completed her no-hit bid with a pop out to second base.

Game 2:

Second Inning:

  • This time, the Black Knights struck first with a solo shot with no outs in the bottom of the second.

Fourth:

  • Wahler singled to start the inning and stole a base to get into scoring position. It was her second theft of the day.
  • The Crusaders tied it up when Bengston singled through the right side to bring Wahler home.
  • Army would answer in the bottom half when, with two outs, a double and a single put the home team back up by one.

Fifth:

  • After Hannah Horton was hit by a pitch and Molly Neil came on to pinch run, Neil made it to second, but was stranded there.

Sixth:

  • Chavez started the frame with a single, but the Black Knights would end the inning with a double play and a ground out.

Seventh:

  • Unable to put any runners on in the seventh, the Crusaders fell, 2-1.

ON DECK:

Holy Cross is back in action next Saturday at Boston University for its second weekend of Patriot League play.
