Men's Hockey Falls In Heartbreaker at Robert Morris, 3-2

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was edged in their final game of the season at Robert Morris, 3-2. Tommy Nixon marked a career-high 37 saves and Ryan Leibold and Kevin Darrar struck for Holy Cross. But, a late third period goal from the Colonials proved to be the deciding factor.

 

The Crusaders (10-21-5) came out hot in the first period, scoring just five minutes into the frame. After only two penalties were called in game one of the series, six were called in the first 20 minutes. Holy Cross defended a five-on-three and had three power plays of their own. Robert Morris (14-20-2) held a 9-6 advantage in shots.

 

Robert Morris got on the board four minutes into the second period with a penalty shot by Alex Tonge. The Colonials outshot the Crusaders, 10-1, through the first half of the period and added a second goal at 13:06. Three more penalties were called and the Crusaders defended twice, keeping the Colonials from a power play goal. Robert Morris outshot Holy Cross, 17-10, in the middle frame.

 

Holy Cross evened the game less than six minutes into the third period, 2-2. At 13:45 after a point-blank shot in the slot that Nixon turned aside, the puck was loose in the crease amongst a scrum. Robert Morris scored on the play, 3-2.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

1-0 HC (1st – 5:07, EV): Spencer Trapp drove down the boards and started to circle behind the Robert Morris goal. The defenseman let go of a backhand slot for Ryan Leibold to one-time in the slot.

    1. RMU (2nd – 4:11, PS): Tonge scored on a penalty shot, stickhandling to the left of the net and shooting just under the crossbar.

2-1 RMU (2nd – 13:06, EV): Daniel Mantenuto received a pass from the half wall and fired a wrist shot quickly in the slot.

2-2 HC (3rd – 5:59, EV): Kevin Darrar kept a puck in at the offensive blue line and skated into the slot. Darrar let go of a snap shot that went directly under the far corner of the net.

3-2 RMU (3rd – 13:45, EV): After Nixon made a point blank save in the slot, the rebound popped out to Nick Lalonde, who forced the puck over the goal line in a scrum in the crease.

  • Tommy Nixon recorded a career-high 37 saves.
  • The Crusaders went five-for-five on the penalty kill.
