Game 2 Box Score

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Holy Cross softball team dropped a pair of close games on the second day of the USF Series Tournament on Saturday. First, the Crusaders fell to Western Michigan by a score of 4-2 and then, to Chattanooga, 1-0.

Kelly Nelson saw action in both games going a total of 9.0 innings on the day, while allowing only two hits, two walks, one earned run, and striking out nine. She started and went the full seven against Chattanooga and gave up two hits, two walks, an earned run, and struck out eight. Alexandra Held went 2.1 innings, giving up one earned run and four hits and striking out one. Katie Barbarick pitched 1.2 innings and gave up no earned runs and only one hit.

Offensively, the Crusaders out hit both of their opponents on the day, 8-5 against Western Michigan and 3-2 against Chattanooga. Three Crusaders had two hits including Erin Bengston who had a triple and scored a run, Jackie Brewster who also had a triple, and Alyssa Gutierrez. Taylor Wahler had one hit and stole two bases.

Game 1 vs. Western Michigan

Second Inning:

  • Bengston started the inning out with a triple to deep right center.
  • Jessie Nagel followed it up with a single to right for the first run of the game and advanced to second on the throw.
  • Held then grounded to third, but reached on an error, driving Nagel home.

Third:

  • Thanks to two doubles and a wild pitch, the Broncos scored four in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Fourth-Seventh:

  • In every inning from the fourth through the seventh, the Crusaders would have a lone base runner, but could never string multiple hits together.
  • With two outs in the seventh, Gutierrez singled up the middle to keep Holy Cross alive, but again, she was the only player to reach base in the frame.

Game 2 vs. Chattanooga

First Inning:

  • Brewster started the game out for Holy Cross with a leadoff triple, but no one behind her in the lineup could push her across.

Second:

  • Nelson retired all three Mocs in order, including two with strikeouts.

Third:

  • Bailey Chavez walked with one out, but again no other Crusaders would reach base in the inning.

Fourth:

  • Wahler would single to start the inning and stole two bases, but was stranded on third.

Fifth:

  • Nelson again retired Chattanooga in order.

Sixth:

  • With two outs and a full count, the Mocs homored to center to take a 1-0 lead.

Seventh:

  • Nelson recorded her eighth strikeout of the game, but the Holy Cross offense couldn’t manufacture any runs so the game ended with the Mocs on top.

UP NEXT:

Holy Cross will take on Central Michigan tomorrow, March 10, at 9 a.m. in its final game at the USF Series.
