COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was defeated by Air Force, 4-2, on Saturday night. Holy Cross saw two different goal scorers and outshot the Falcons, but it was not enough.

The Crusaders (10-19-5, 10-14-4 AHA) took the lead less than three minutes into opening frame. Holy Cross was called for two penalties, nearly simultaneously, and had to defend a five-on-three. Tommy Nixon helped the team kill off the penalties and made five stops in the 1:57 of penalty time. The first 20-minutes ended with Air Force (16-13-5, 14-10-4 AHA) holding a 12-4 lead in shots but Holy Cross led, 1-0.

In the second period, Air Force took a 2-1 lead. Five penalties were called in the middle frame. Despite Air Force taking the lead, Jay Mackie scored his first of the season to even things up, 2-2. The Crusaders outshot the Falcons, 15-4, in the second period.

Air Force took the lead in the third period, scoring at the midway point. The shots were even between the teams, but Holy Cross was unable to convert. The Falcons added an insurance goal with 1:35 to play in the game, 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1-0 HC (1st – 2:30, EV): Spencer Trapp rushed the puck into the neutral zone, where he did escape move and sent off the puck towards the goal. On the back post, Logan Ferguson was in position to one-time the puck into a nearly open net.

1-1 AFA (2nd – 5:09, EV): During four-on-four play, Air Forces’ Walker Sommer rushed up the ice and skated in on goal, uncontested. Sommer squeaked the puck past Nixon on the breakaway.

2-1 AFA (2nd – 7:59, PP): Matt Koch’s center point shot made its way through traffic and through a screen.

2-2 HC (2nd – 9:33, EV): On the forecheck, Mitch Collett chipped the puck off the wall and to Jay Mackie, who was rushing into the slot. Mackie turned on the shot and wristed it just under the cross bar for his first of the season.

3-2 AFA (3rd – 10:31, EV): Joe Tyran score on a one-time from the high slot.

4-2 AFA (3rd – 18:25, EV): Brady Tomlak chipped the puck in from just above the crease.
