WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Holy Cross women’s lacrosse team was edged by Monmouth, 10-8, on Saturday. The Crusaders saw seven different goal scorers and were led by Keely Connors. Holy Cross outscored Monmouth in the second half but it was not enough to erase the first half deficit.

 

Holy Cross (1-2) held Monmouth (2-0) to just one goal for the first 15 minutes of the opening half. At 16:49, Riley Bergholtz scored her first goal of the season to even the game, 1-1. The Hawks went on a five goal run in 10 minutes to take a 6-1 lead. The Crusaders found more offense as Keely Connors scored at the 2:29 mark and Jordyn Arakelian at 1:51, to close the half, 6-3.

 

Jolie Creo scored to push the game to a two goal differential to open the second half. Monmouth found the back of the net twice more to extend their lead once again, 8-4. At 15:06, Catherine Guanci recoded her second of the season to narrow the Hawks lead. Monmouth added their ninth goal of the game at 14:05, but Holy Cross responded with a goal from Bryn Carroll, 9-6.

 

Monmouth scored for the final time with 6:38 to play to give the Hawks a 10-6 lead. Holy Cross continued to pressure, scoring two goals to close the half. Connors added her second of the game at 1:32 and Izzy Grant tallied the eighth Crusader goal at 1:10.

 

Sophie Ochs made eight saves in the game. Holy Cross and Monmouth were relatively even on the box score, the Hawks held a 28-25 advantage in shots but each team recorded 18 shots on goal.

  • As a team Holy Cross forced 10 turnovers.
  • Both teams recorded 10 draw controls and 20 turnovers.
  • Holy Cross picked up 22 ground balls to Monmouth’s 21.
  • The Crusaders went 2-for-3 on their free position shots.

  • With 10 draw controls, four players led with two.
  • Keely Connors led the Crusader offense with two goals.
  • Audrey Mandaro picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers to pace the Crusaders’ defense.
