WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross softball team opened its season with a 5-2 loss to Quinnipiac, followed by a 6-0 shutout win over Drexel, Friday at the Madeira Beach Invitational in Florida.

Kelly Nelson shined in her collegiate debut, completely silencing Drexel’s offense over seven full innings, striking out 14, allowing only two hits, and walking two. Taylor Wahler started her senior season with a bang, going four-for-six on the day with a run and a walk. Jackie Brewster and Jessie Nagel led the Crusaders with two RBIs each.

Vs. Quinnipiac:

First

  • The Bobcats got on the board first after singling in a run.

Second

  • Quinnipiac added to its lead by way of a two-run home run. The Crusaders trailed 3-0 after two.

Third

  • Boothe started the inning with a single to right, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and made her way to third on a Chavez single.
  • Brewster grounded out, but Boothe scored on the play.
  • With a runner in scoring position, the Bobcats doubled to make it 4-1.

Fifth

  • Hannah Horton reached base on an error and Molly Neil came out to pinch run and quickly stole second.
  • Neil scored on a Brewster single to left.
  • Quinnipiac added one more with two outs in the inning to make the score 5-2, where it would stay.

Vs. Drexel:

Second

  • Nelson struck out the side.

Fourth

  • The Crusaders broke the stalemate in the fourth when Erin Bengston got her first collegiate hit and RBI, a double down the left field line that pushed Nagel across.
  • After a single by Bella Jankowski got Bengston to third, Horton hit a sac fly to center that brought home the second run of the frame.

Fifth

  • Nelson sat all three Dragon batters down by way of the K for the second time in the game.

Seventh

  • Sydney Burr hit a solo shot to right center for the first Holy Cross four-bagger of the year.
  • With the bases loaded, Nagel singled to left center to drive in two. A third Crusader came across thanks to a Drexel error, wrapping up the four-run inning.
  • The final three Dragons were retired with a fly out, a line out, and a pop up to give Holy Cross its first victory of 2019.

UP NEXT:

The Crusaders are back in action tomorrow against Butler at 11:30 a.m., and Akron at 4:30 p.m, as they continue play at the Madeira Beach Invitational.
