Crusaders Fall to Colgate 74-70
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore guard Caleb Green scored 19 points on eight of nine shooting from the field, but the Holy Cross men’s basketball team was defeated by Colgate 74-70 at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders fall to 13-13 overall and 4-9 in the Patriot League with the loss, while the Raiders improve to 16-10 on the season and 8-5 in the conference.
Holy Cross made 51.9 percent of its field goal attempts and 44.4 percent of its three-pointers on the night, but was only able to connect on 57.1 percent of its free throws. Colgate hit 55.6 percent of its shots from the floor, 52.4 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc and 68.4 percent of its foul shots.
The game was close throughout a first half which featured 11 lead changes. The Crusaders held an early 14-8 lead, before the Raiders used a 9-2 spurt to pull in front. Colgate was later up 26-21, when Holy Cross went on a 17-5 run to claim a 38-31 advantage. The Crusaders eventually led 39-37 at halftime.
The Raiders pulled ahead by six (52-46) with 14:26 left to play, when Holy Cross scored 11 straight points to go in front by five (57-52). Colgate came back to tie up the game at 62-62, before a jumper by Green and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jacob Grandison gave the Crusaders a 67-62 advantage with three minutes left. But Colgate then used a 9-1 spurt to pull back in front for good, taking the lead on a three-pointer by Rapolas Ivanauskas with 1:29 remaining. The Raiders would make three of four free throws in the final 10 seconds to hold on for the win.
Grandison finished the night with 13 points and five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Austin Butler added 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, while sophomore forward Matt Faw tallied 11 points and five rebounds. Colgate was led by Tucker Richardson with 20 points and six assists.
The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 16, when they play host to Bucknell at 12:05 p.m.
