Men's Basketball Shuts Down Army 56-42

WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore guard Austin Butler totaled 14 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, two assists and two blocked shots, to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to a 56-42 victory over Army West Point at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Crusaders improve to 13-11 overall and 4-7 in the Patriot League with the win, while the Black Knights fall to 11-13 on the season and 6-5 in the conference.

Holy Cross turned one of its top defensive performances of the season, holding Army to 26.4 percent shooting from the field while forcing 20 turnovers. The Crusaders were able to connect on 40.7 percent of their field goal attempts and turned the ball over just nine times.

The score was tied at 6-6 early on, when Holy Cross went on a 7-0 run to claim a 13-6 advantage with 10:26 left in the first half. The Crusaders extended their lead nine points (23-14) late in the half, before taking a 25-19 advantage into the locker room.

After sophomore guard Jacob Grandison scored on the opening possession of the second half to put Holy Cross up 27-19, the Black Knights went on a 10-0 run to claim their first lead of the night (29-27). Army was later up 35-34 with 12:50 left to play, when the Crusaders scored seven straight points to pull back in front (41-35). Butler scored five of Holy Cross’ points during that spurt. The Crusaders then held the Black Knights to just seven points the rest of the night, and pulled away down the stretch for a 14-point victory.

Grandison finished the game with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals, while senior forward Jehyve Floyd added 10 points, three assists and two rebounds. Jordan Fox led Army with 18 points, six rebounds and three assists.

The Crusaders will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 10, when they travel to Lafayette for a 12:00 p.m. game which will be shown live to a national audience on the CBS Sports Network.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Butler posted his team-leading third double-double of the season.
• The Holy Cross defense posted its best marks of the season in points allowed (42) and field goal percentage allowed (.264).
• The Crusaders also tied their season-high with 20 forced turnovers.
