Men's Basketball Downed by Army West Point
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point center Matt Wilson totaled 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Black Knights to a 76-57 victory over the Holy Cross men’s basketball team at Christl Arena. The Crusaders fall to 11-9 overall and 2-5 in the Patriot League with the loss, while Army improves to 10-10 on the season and 5-2 in the conference.
Holy Cross made just 41.8 percent of its field goal attempts, 30.4 percent of its three-pointers and 44.4 percent of its free throws on the night. Army was able to connect on 57.8 percent of its shots from the floor, 45.8 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc and 76.5 percent of its foul shots.
The game was close early on, and the Black Knights held an 18-17 lead with 9:53 left in the first half. Army then used a 9-2 run to extend its advantage to eight (27-19), and eventually went in front by 12 (38-26) with 1:06 to go before the break. Holy Cross closed half by scoring the final five points, and trailed 38-31 heading into the locker room.
The Crusaders kept the game close early in the second half, trimming the margin to four (43-39) on a jumper by sophomore guard Caleb Green with 15:42 remaining. The Black Knights were later up 52-47 with 9:34 left to play, before scoring eight straight points to go in front by 13 (60-47). Holy Cross would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way, and Army eventually pulled away to win by 19.
The Crusaders will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26, when they play host to Navy at 3:05 p.m. as part of Winter Homecoming weekend.
