HAMDEN, Conn. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was defeated at No. 6 Quinnipiac on Tuesday night. Three second period goals from the Bobcats ensured the victory. Patrick O'Leary scored the lone Crusaders goal and Tommy Nixon made 31 saves in the game. Holy Cross falls to 4-15-3 and Quinnipiac improves to 18-5-1.

 

The first period saw one Bobcat goal and Tommy Nixon, who recorded his second start of the season, turned aside 17 Bobcat shots. The Crusaders generated offense in the closing minute of the opening period.

 

Quinnipiac added to their lead early in the second period. But, Holy Cross broke through when Patrick O’Leary scored his first collegiate goal. The Bobcats added two power play goals in the second half of the middle frame to extend their lead, 4-1.

 

In the third period, the Crusaders outshot the Bobcats, 16-8, but neither team converted. In the game, Quinnipiac outshot Holy Cross, 35-26.

 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

1-0 QU (1st – 13:54, EV): On a rush, Quinnipiac’s Brogan Rafferty sent a behind-the-back pass across the slot to Desi Burgart, who shot across the net to the top right corner.

2-0 QU (2nd – 3:22, EV): Alex Whalen tipped the puck between Nixon’s legs after a shot from the point.

2-1 HC (2nd – 5:48, EV): After dumping the puck into the offensive zone, Patrick O'Leary pressured Quinnipiac’s goaltender Andrew Shortridge. O’Leary stole the puck and scored a wraparound goal on the empty net.

3-1 QU (2nd – 8:55, PP): On the back door, William Fallstrom scored a power play goal.

4-1 QU (2nd – 19:12, PP): Brandon Fortunato scored with a shot from the point through a screen.

Holy Cross will play two games at Sacred Heart on Jan. 25 and 26. The Crusaders will play Friday at 7:05 p.m. and Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
