WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team was narrowly defeated by American International, 3-2, on Saturday night. Johnny Coughlin scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the game. Holy Cross moves to 4-14-3 and 4-10-2 in league play and AIC improves to 12-11-1 and 12-7-1 in league action.

 

The Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the first period as Johnny Coughlin scored his team-best third power play goal of the season nearing the midway point. Erik Gordon turned aside all 12 Yellow Jacket shots he faced.

 

In the second period, Holy Cross doubled their lead to 2-0 when Peter Crinella showcased some fancy stick work. The Yellow Jackets scored two goals of their own later in the period. AIC held a slight, 9-8, advantage in shots in the period.

 

Early in the third period, American International tallied the go-ahead-goal. Despite 12 third period shots, Holy Cross was unable to tie up the game.

 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

1-0 HC (1st – 11:07, PP): On the power play breakout, Anthony Vincent rushed the puck up the ice along the boards and into the offensive zone corner. Vincent found a trailing Johnny Coughlin in the high slot, for a quick wrist shot past AIC’s Zackarias Skog.

2-0 HC (2nd – 0:34, EV): Jack Surowiec forced a turnover on the Crusaders’ offensive blue line and sent Peter Crinella off into the zone. Crinella stickhandled around two Yellow Jacket defensemen and fired a shot to the top left corner of the net.

2-1 AIC (2nd – 4:06, EV): Janis Jaks one-timed a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle through traffic and past Gordon.

2-2 AIC (2nd – 17:00, PP): On the power play, Chris Theodore put in a rebound that bounced to the back door.

3-2 AIC (3rd – 3:09, EV): AIC’s Kyle Stephan tipped in a shot from the left side of the crease.

 

 

NOTES & NUMBERS:

  • Erik Gordon made 27 saves.
  • Johnny Coughlin tallied his team-leading sixth goal to give him a team best 17 points.
  • The Crusaders went 1-for-4 on the power play.
