ERIE, Pa. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team defeated Mercyhurst, 5-4, on Saturday night. The Crusaders’ saw five different goal scorers and three players posted one goal and one assist: Johnny Coughlin, Spencer Trapp, and Neil Robinson. Anthony Vincent added two helpers in the game as well. The Holy Cross win marks the first win over Mercyhurst since Nov. 11, 2016. The Crusaders improve to 3-12-2, 3-8-1 AHA and the Lakers drop to 9-11-2, 7-6-1 AHA.

 

The first period saw a lot of actions as the teams skated to a 2-2 tie through the first 20 minutes of action. The Lakers tallied two goals in the opening 2:32 of play. The Crusaders chipped away at the Lakers’ lead as Spencer Trapp and Johnny Coughlin each recorded their third goals of the season.

 

Holy Cross started the second period with a five minute power play and posted two power play goals on the opportunity. The Crusaders held a 4-2 lead at the 15:56 mark of the middle frame. Mercyhurst earned an even strength goal just over half way through and then evened the game with a power play goal of their own.

 

Holy Cross tallied the go-ahead-goal with 9:56 to play in the third period by way of Kevin Darrar. The Crusaders went on to kill a four-on-three and keep the Lakers off the scoreboard. Erik Gordon made 27 stops, including a point-blank shot with under a minute to play.

 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

 

1-0 MU (1st – 1:28, EV): Mercyhurst took advantage of a two-on-one around the net as Taylor Best fired off a slap shot from the slot.

2-0 MU (1st – 2:32, EV): In a scrum in front of Erik Gordon, Mercyhurst’s Joseph Duszak scored.

2-1 HC (1st – 4:27, EV): Spencer Trapp rushed the puck up the ice and passed to Jay Mackie on the wing. Mackie turned the corner and his backhand pass found Trapp at the top of the crease on the back post for a tap in goal.

2-2 HC (1st – 17:01, PP): The Crusaders worked the puck around in the offensive zone on the power play. In the corner, Michael Laffin passed behind the goal to Anthony Vincent who sent a perfect feed for Johnny Coughlin to walk into a slap shot. Coughlin’s shot cleanly beat Mercyhurst’s Garrett Metcalf.

3-2 HC (2nd – 2:25, PP): Peter Crinella tipped in a Dalton Skelly point shot to put the Crusaders ahead. After a won offensive zone faceoff, Mitch Collett came off the wing and moved the puck to Skelly. Skelly sent a high shot that Crinella got a stick on to score his third of the season.

4-2 HC (2nd – 4:04, PP): Coughlin fed Trapp off the wall and Trapp rushed the puck towards the goal. Trapp’s shot left a rebound to the left of the goal-mouth. Neil Robinson rushed in from the left hash marks and roofed a shot for his third of the season.

4-3 MU (2nd- 12:12, EV): A loose puck slid across the crease and Derek Barach was there to slam it in.

4-4 MU (2nd – 18:32, PP): On a five-minute power play of their own, Joshua Lammon scored to tie the game.

5-4 HC (3rd – 9:56, EV): Robinson rushed the zone along the half wall and passed to Vincent in the slot. Vincent wristed a shot that bounced off Metcalf and Kevin Darrar crashed the net to put in his second of the year.

 

NOTES & NUMBERS:

  • The Crusaders outshot the Lakers, 31-25.
  • The Crusaders’ three power play goals marks the first time since Feb. 9, 2018 that the team has scored three man-advantage goals in a single-game.
  • Holy Cross’ victory marks the first time the Crusaders have defeated the Lakers since Nov. 11, 2016.
  • Michael Laffin’s assist on the power play marks his fourth point in three games. Johnny Coghlin’s two-points pushes his point-streak to three games, and his longest of the season.
  • Holy Cross went 3/5 on the power play and 5/6 on the penalty kill.
