Grandison Scores 25, Men's Basketball Downs Iona 78-71
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Jacob Grandison totaled a career-high 25 points, nine rebounds and eight assists to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 78-71 victory over Iona at the Hynes Athletics Center. The Crusaders improve to 9-4 on the season with the win, while the Gaels fall to 2-9 overall.
Holy Cross made 53.7 percent of its field goal attempts, 41.7 percent of its three-pointers and 76.9 percent of its free throws on the day, in addition to holding a 33-28 rebounding advantage. The Gaels hit 49.1 percent of their shots from the floor, but connected on just 27.8 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc and 58.8 percent of their foul shots.
Iona started the game hot, hitting its first three shots while jumping out to a quick 9-3 lead. The Gaels eventually went in front by eight (22-14 at the 9:57-mark of the first half) and were still up by four (26-22) with six minutes left before the break. The Crusaders then went on an 18-4 over the next five minutes to pull in front, with sophomore guard Austin Butler scoring 12 points during that stretch. Holy Cross would lead 40-33 heading into the locker room.
The Crusader lead would stay between three and 10 points for the majority of the second half, and Holy Cross was up 71-67 with less than two minutes to play. A layup by Butler then put the Crusaders back up by six, and Holy Cross held the Gaels to two of seven shooting down the stretch to pull out the victory.
Butler finished the game with 17 points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Caleb Green added 16 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals. Iona was led by Tajuan Agee with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
The Crusaders will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 3, when they travel to Loyola (Md.) for their Patriot League opener at 7:00 p.m.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Holy Cross' nine victories this year are its most prior to New Year's Day since going 9-3 in November and December during the 2000-2001 season.
• The Crusaders made at least 50 percent of their field goal attempts for the fifth time this season, and stand 5-0 in those games.
• Holy Cross improves to 4-0 on the year against opponents from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
