AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore guard Jacob Grandison totaled 20 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, to lead the Holy Cross men’s basketball team to an 82-78 victory over Massachusetts at the Mullins Center. The Crusaders improve to 6-3 on the season with the win, while the Minutemen fall to 5-4 overall.

Holy Cross hit 54.4 percent of its field goal attempts, 42.1 percent of its three-pointers and 70.6 percent of its free throws on the night, while recording 24 assists on 31 made shots. UMass was only able to hit 41.4 percent of its shots from the floor, but made 43.5 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc.

The game was close early on, and the Minutemen held a 19-16 lead after the first 10 minutes of play. UMass then used a 13-6 spurt to claim a 10-point lead (32-22), before Holy Cross responded with a 15-5 run to tie the game up at 37-37. The Minutemen eventually took a 41-39 advantage into the locker room.

UMass started the second half by scoring the first seven points to go back in front by nine (48-39) with 17:35 remaining. The Crusaders responded with a 10-1 run to tie the game back up, and the score would stay close for several minutes. After the teams were tied at 62-62 with seven minutes left, Holy Cross used a 9-0 spurt to pull in front for good. The Crusaders went on to hit nine of 12 free throws in the final three minutes to pull out the victory.

Sophomore guard Caleb Green totaled 17 points, six assists and four rebounds, while hitting all six of his foul shots in the final minute of play. Senior forward Jehyve Floyd added 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, and sophomore forward Matt Faw chipped in with 10 points, five boards, four assists and three blocks. The Minutemen were led by Luwane Pipkins with 22 points and eight assists.

The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Dec. 8, when they face Rhode Island at the DCU Center at 1:05 p.m.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
• Holy Cross defeated UMass for the first time since 2001, snapping a five-game losing streak in the series.
• The victory was also the first by the Crusaders against an Atlantic 10 opponent since defeating St. Joseph’s 71-66 in 2007.
• Grandison has now led the team in scoring in six of the last seven games.
