WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team lost to American International, 4-2, on Saturday night. Jack Surowiec and Matt Barry scored for the Crusaders. Holy Cross moves to 1-10-2 and 1-6-1 in league play and AIC improves to 7-7-1 and 7-4-1 in league play.

AIC got on the board first early in the period but the Crusaders sustained pressure and evened things up late in the period by way of Jack Surowiec, who has tallied his first three career goals in his last five games played. Holy Cross outshot AIC, 8-7, in the opening frame.

The Crusaders started the second period with a five-minute power play and cashed in on it as Erik Gordon recorded an assist on the play. Later that period, the Crusaders continued with strong special teams as they killed off nearly two minutes of a five-on-three. Late in the period, the Yellow Jackets knotted up the game once more.

In the third period Holy Cross forechecked for nearly the whole period and outshot AIC, 9-6, in the final frame. The Yellow Jackets got a breakaway late that led to a goal and followed with an empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1-0 AIC (1st – 3:06): At an offensive zone faceoff, Shawn McBride won the puck to Kyle Stephan. Stephan let go of a wrist shot that beat Gordon.

1-1 HC (1st – 17:20): Johnny Coughlin broke the puck out of the defensive zone and Anthony Vincent picked up the puck on the half wall in the offensive zone. Vincent backhanded a pass to Jack Surowiec who was rushing into the slot and fired off a one-timer to beat AIC’s Zackarias Skog’s five-hole.

2-1 HC (2nd – 4:41): After sustained offensive pressure on the five-minute power play, Erik Gordon intercepted a cleared puck and passed to Matt Barry. Barry rushed the zone and took advantage of a two-on-one, shooting to the top left corner.

2-2 AIC (2nd – 15:44): Kyle Stephan threw the puck on goal and it bounced off of Luka Maver behind Gordon.

3-2 AIC (3rd – 18:35): Blake Christensen scored on a breakaway.

4-2 AIC (3rd – 19:44): Jared Pike scored after a blue line turnover.
