NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Holy Cross men’s hockey team tied Merrimack, 2-2, on Nov. 23 at Lawler Rink. The Crusaders erased a two-goal deficit in the second period and held off the Warriors. Holy Cross moves to 1-7-2 and Merrimack moves to 4-9-1.

The first period saw a lone Merrimack goal 14 minutes into the period. The Crusaders outshot the Warriors in the first 20 minutes, 10-8.

In the second period, Merrimack extended their lead to 2-0 on a back-door goal. Holy Cross continued to generate offense and capitalized on the power play. Michael Laffin scored his first of the season to put the Crusaders on the board nearing the mid-point of the period. Holy Cross evened the game, 2-2, with 7.5 seconds remaining in the period by way of Johnny Coughlin.

Merrimack outshot Holy Cross in the third period 15-6, as Erik Gordon turned aside all 15 shots. Neither team was able to convert in the final 20 minutes of regulation. Holy Cross tallied the lone shot in the overtime period, even getting the puck behind the goal line, but the play was called no-goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1-0 MC (1st – 13:55): Tyler Irvine forced the puck over the goal line in a scrum in front of the net.

2-0 MC (2nd – 6:50): Christian Simeone powered in the puck along the back post as Jordan Seyfert passed across the slot from the corner.

2-1 HC (2nd – 11:09): On the power play, Matt Barry moved the puck from the half-wall to Mitch Collett behind the net. Collett threaded a pass to Michael Laffin in the slot, who one-timed the puck to beat Merrimack’s Craig Pantano’s five hole.

2-2 HC (2nd – 19:53): Collett fought for the puck in the corner and won the battle to give Johnny Coughlin a lane to goal. Coughlin deked two Warrior defenders and then roofed the puck from right above the crease.
